Garry "G" Cobb
Garry “G” Cobb is a classic case of a former NFL star, who transitioned out of football into a successful radio and television career. Garry played linebacker in the NFL for 11 years. He’s currently the Eagles Football analyst for FOX29 television in Philadelphia. He is also a NFL Transition Coach, who is employed by the NFL and serves as a life coach and mentor to current and former National Football League players.
He spent his first six seasons with the Detroit Lions, where he was a team captain and led them to the playoffs in two of those three seasons. During his time with the Lions, the Detroit defense had a fierce pass rush and led the league against the run in three of those seasons. Cobb led NFL linebackers in interceptions with four during the 1983 season in Detroit.
Garry then played three years with the Philadelphia Eagles along side NFL Hall-Of-Famer Reggie White. As an outside linebacker for the Eagles, Garry had his best day as a pro in 1986, when he registered four sacks, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery in a single game against the Atlanta Falcons and was named the Sports Illustrated NFL Defensive Player Of The Week.
He finished his career with two years in Dallas, where he played alongside future NFL Hall of Famers Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin. In one of his years with the Cowboys, he led the defense with 7.5 quarterback sacks.
After his football career, Garry became a popular sports media personality in the Philadelphia area. Since his playing days, Garry has been a radio talk show host on WIP Sports radio and worked as a sports anchor and reporter on CBS-3 television in Philadelphia,
Prior to playing in the NFL, Garry was an All-American football, basketball and baseball player in Stamford, Connecticut. He was heavily recruited out of high school before deciding to the go to the University Of Southern California. While there, Garry was a defensive captain and starting outside linebacker on two Rose Bowl Championship teams and one National Championship squad. Three of his USC teammates, Ronnie Lott, Marcus Allen and Anthony Munoz went on to become NFL Hall of Famers.
In 2002, Garry received an award from President George W. Bush for his mentoring program with underprivileged and incarcerated youth. He has received other awards for his contributions to youth with challenges in the Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Detroit and Dallas areas.
Garry and his wife Gwendolyn have three children and five grandchildren.
